2023 was a big year for concerts, from the Taylor Swift Eras Tour to the Travis Scott Circus Maximus Tour and much more! Whenever you attend a concert, it affects you much deeper than just making you feel good, and in this article, I will be taking you through the deeper effects of going to concerts.
Firstly, concerts are known to help boost your mood, they help reduce stress, and they have even been used to treat anxiety and depression! The endorphin rush that live music causes can strengthen positive emotions. The feeling of community from being around people with similar tastes in music can make you feel much happier as well. Alexa Powers (10) said, “It made me really happy because I got to see somebody I really like perform in real life.”
However, if you’re listening to melancholic or depressing music it could have the opposite effect of lowering serotonin levels and making you feel much sadder.
However, Concerts can put a dent in your sleep schedule. they’re late at night, loud, and usually, you won’t be sleeping for a while after. Sleep is a big part of your life. on average, you’ll be asleep for one-third of your life! But, if you constantly go to concerts late at night, and you’re not getting enough sleep, it can have a negative effect on your life. It will leave you feeling groggy and drained most of the day. Sleeping this late will disrupt your circadian rhythm and your body will get used to producing melatonin at a later time. Mason Rodriguez (9) “I couldn’t go to sleep, and when I did I was dreaming about it”. This can be detrimental because it will not only affect your sleep schedule, it will also affect your day-to-day schedule.
Finally, going to concerts involves loud music. Over time, this can affect your hearing. When you are exposed to loud noises for a long period it will overwork the hair cells in your ear. Those cells are very sensitive, and when they are overworked they end up dying, which leads to being hard of hearing, or in extreme cases, going deaf.
Attending concerts is a very fun time, but not something you should be doing all the time. It will boost your mood and help your mental health, but you should also keep in mind the negative effects, from messing with your sleep schedule to damaging your ears permanently.
