It’s Valentine’s season so naturally — this issue’s Kilt Radio is on love songs! Love songs have often gone unappreciated, considered even cheesy, and played out. But great love songs can give us the chance to explore complex feelings in small, safe spaces, and even resolve them in ways that often elude us in real life. From bubbly pop perfection with “party 4 u” by Charli XCX, to lingering warm folk with “zombie girl” by Adrianne Lenker, this playlist will make you swoon, laugh, and perhaps shed a tear or two.

Silk Chiffon” by MUNA & Phoebe Bridgers

The iconic collaboration between queer pop icons Phoebe Bridgers and MUNA created the perfect light and airy romantic hit for this Valentine’s Day. MUNA has recently gained more traction in the indie-pop scene with their appearances with Boygenius and as openers for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. With modern songs often saturated in gut-wrenching lyrics and vocals, this light-hearted bop is a unique and surprising juxtaposition. “Life’s so fun/ Life’s so fun/ Got my mini skirt and my rollerblades on.” “Silk Chiffon” is a jovial bubblegum-filled fantasy of a song reminiscent of rom-coms and young love.

“So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” by Caroline Polachek

Originally released as a single for her debut album “Pang,” “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” is desperately catchy and infectious. Polachek, in her signature ethereal voice, creates a hook that is both dreamy and playful, fit for a song where she sings “I cry on the dance floor, it’s so embarrassing.” Perfectly balancing vulnerability and longing, this track is a great addition to our love song playlist.

“Hardly Ever Smile (Without You)” by POiSON GiRL FRiEND

This is the oldest track on our playlist, released in 1992, but you would never know because of Poison Girl Friend’s futuristic celestial sound. The track starts slow and pensive, with waning and waxing melodies, then builds up into a dramatic melancholy beauty as Poison Girl Friend sings alongside modified sweeping violin. She serenades her devotion, singing “I’d give up my life, For just your kiss.
